A biofuel blend using 10% cellulose-derived ethanol has gone on sale in a one month trial program in Canada. Customers at a Shell service station in Ottawa, Ontario, will become the first in the world to fill their tanks with gasoline containing advanced second generation biofuels, in this case made from wheat straw.

Ethanol production from wood chips, grass and other plant material could "explode" by 2012 if a commercialized facility to produce the second generation of biofuels is successful.

The benefits of cellulose conversion are dramatically larger; indeed, a conventional internal combustion engine operating on cellulosic ethanol produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions on a life-cycle basis than a fuel cell operating on hydrogen derived from fossil fuels.
